Music Theory Tuition
I teach music theory from complete beginners up to ABRSM Grade 8 level, as part of flute lessons or separately, to players of any instrument. Learning theory enriches your knowledge of music - helping you to understand different styles, technical terms, harmony and the structure of pieces, and to start composing your own music.
Theory tuition can help with the written sections of GCSE and A Level Music, and can be useful for entrance to University music courses. Some music exam boards require theory grades to be passed as a pre-requisite for other exams - Grade 5 theory is required for ABRSM practical exams above Grade 5, and some performing and teaching diplomas have theory grade requirements.
Theory lessons are available in person or by online distance learning.
I am an ISM Registered Private Teacher, which means I have been through their vetting process, have a current Enhanced DBS check and follow their code of conduct and safeguarding procedures.
Lessons in person: Depending on your requirements, music theory lessons can be arranged on a weekly, fortnightly or ad hoc basis. I will travel to you, anywhere within the Sheffield city area. I will travel to you, anywhere within the Sheffield city area.
To enquire about music theory lessons for yourself or your child, please contact me with your requirements, details of any previous experience, the area you live in (I am not currently able to teach from my own home), and suitable days/times.

Fees: I work on a monthly ‘subscription’ payment system for lessons in person, as shown in the table. You pay the same amount every month, regardless of how many weeks are in each month, to spread your payments evenly across the year. This is based on me being available to teach for 42 weeks in the year (this takes into account holidays and other days I may need to take off for training etc).
Any less frequent, extra or ad-hoc lessons will be charged at £35 per hour.
Fees can be paid by cash, cheque, bank transfer or debit/ credit card.

Distance learning tuition:
I offer email-based distance learning tuition for music theory up to ABRSM Grade 8 level - setting and marking exercises and past papers, giving advice and guidance on learning materials and working through the theory grades. If you're working towards exams, I can enter you for theory exams at the centre most convenient for you. You will need to buy the appropriate theory workbooks and exam past papers, and need to be able to send me a copy of your completed work by email (either a clear scan or photo works fine). I provide quick, thorough feedback by email, and additional resources for any areas where you need extra practice or revision. To enquire about online tuition for music theory please contact me with information about your requirements and previous experience. Fees £60 per month for ongoing support. Fees can be paid by bank transfer or debit/ credit card. One-off sessions of support/ marking by arrangement. Gift vouchers are available if you would like to pay for someone else's lessons as a gift. |
"Rachel taught and supported me through Grade 7 Theory of Music and I am so excited to say that with her help I achieved a distinction! Rachel explained everything so clearly - I finally felt that I truly understood the material. She provided lots of different suggestions for how to improve my work, plenty of practice questions and huge amounts of clear and helpful feedback. Rachel taught me online and I felt that this process worked really well. There was a quick turnaround on marking my work and because the teaching was online, all her advice and notes were of course written down, which was so helpful. I'm now looking forward to learning Grade 8 Theory of Music with Rachel!"
