Flute Lessons
I offer flute lessons for children and adults, from complete beginners upwards. I love helping people of all ages to learn, improve and enjoy their playing and understanding of music.
I encourage students to make music with other people from an early stage - playing duets in lessons and taking part in ensembles. I run Sheffield Flute Choir for players from Grade 5 upwards, and arrange group playing for adult students from beginner up to Grade 4-5. I offer group lessons to work on ensemble skills and arrange workshops and informal concerts for students. I also teach recorder, piccolo, alto and bass flute.
Read comments from students and parents about their lessons and workshops, and find out more about me and my approach to teaching.
For students who want to take exams, I can help you prepare for Trinity, ABRSM or LCM exams, and for the performance aspects of GCSE and A Level music. l can accompany on piano for the early grade exams, and can help you to arrange an accompanist for higher grades. Recent flute students have gone on to study music at Leeds College of Music and the University of Oxford.
All lessons include music theory, learning about how music works, some music history, and what all those signs and symbols mean! I can help you to study theory in more depth and take music theory exams too, if you choose to. I also teach theory separately, to players of any instrument.
I'm based in Heeley (S2), or I may be able to travel to you (within the Sheffield city area). I also teach online so you can access lessons from anywhere.
I am an ISM Registered Private Teacher, which means I have been through their vetting process, have a current Enhanced DBS check and follow their code of conduct and safeguarding procedures.

Instruments and sheet music
I have a beginner flute available so you can try it out if you've never played before, and I can advise on options for renting and buying instruments. For younger students I sometimes start by teaching them on the fife, recorder or a smaller flute before moving on to a full-sized flute.

Fees
I work on a monthly ‘subscription’ payment system for lessons, as shown in the table. You pay the same amount at the start of every month, regardless of how many weeks are in each month, to spread your payments evenly across the year. This is based on me being available to teach for 42 weeks in the year (this takes into account holidays and other days I may need to take off for training etc).
Any less frequent, extra or ad-hoc lessons will be charged at £35 per hour. Fees can be paid by cash, cheque, bank transfer or debit/ credit card.
To enquire about flute lessons or arrange a trial lesson for yourself or your child, please contact me with your requirements, details of any previous playing experience, the area you live in (I am not currently able to teach from my own home), and suitable days/times.
